We are now in Jogjakarta also spelt Yogyakarta and called here Joggia. It is very different from anywhere else we have been in Indonesia, a bustling city with all the pollution and bad air that comes from a place like that. Around the city it is beautiful, quite green although it is int middle of the dry season and hasn't rained for months.
We have spent the time going to temples, the first is Prambanan, a series of temples at present being restored after an earthquake in 2006. The damage lloks minor but some areas still fenced of due to damaged and unsafe masonry. The other one we have been to today is Borbudur, a fantastic architectural masterpiece. Both are on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and both deserve it. Pictures hopefully to follow.
We are also going up Gunang Merapi tomorrow, this is the regions most active Volcano. Sunday is Independance day here in Indonesia and everyone has to celebrate. We have read in the press that the local officials will be checking all businesses and large buildings to ensure that they are flying the national flag. Not really a problem as everyone seems to have them from horses on the tourist transport to all vehicles
We have now booked to go to Borneo (called Kalimantan here) on Tuesday for 5 days or so to see the forest and the Orang Utans. We shall again be staying on a boat so out of contact for a while.
If the connection gets a little better then we will put some more pics up
Mike & Jan
