We have now been in Panama since Wednesday night and it is now Sunday eve. The first couple of days were spent sorting things in the City before hiring a car and leaving Friday to go to El Valle. This is a small town in situated in a very old crater surrounded by peaks to walk on and lots of pristine forest. The valley is very green and had loads of homes owned by rich Panamanians and Americans as it is only a coiuple of hours from the city. At weekends the place is buzzing with people at the weekend retreats but lots going back now.
We have managed a guided walk to see birds and a long walk by ourselves up the side of a river cascading down through the forest. We would have reached the top but it started to thunder so we decided against it. A lot of the river pools at the foot of waterfalls are used for swimming by the locals and as it was Sunday they were very busy. Up higher we were on our own. The whole area is a birders paradise with many around and fairly easy to see early mornings. Once the weater gets hot they all disappear until just before sunset.
Tomorrow we leave the hills for a while and go on to the lowlands and coast further west hopefully for some sea and surf.
More to follow as and when we get internet connections.
